Only 33% Of Americans Have A Will

Have you seen our new billboard? It’s True! A recent study done by Caring.com found that only 1 in every 3 American adults have an estate planning instrument. This means that 66% of people will leave it to the government to decide what should be done with their assets upon their death. Many people think that they do not have enough money to warrant an estate plan. Others do not know they have the power to choose who to give an inheritance to when they pass. Still others do not have any surviving family to pass their estate too. These beliefs should not deter anyone from having an estate plan and making a simple Will.

No estate is too small for a Will. Whether you have $100 or $1,000,000, your estate will need to be administered for any amount of money to pass to your heirs. We all have the final say for whom to give our estate assets to when we pass and how much. You can give money to your whole family, some of your family, or if you have no family left, to friends and/or charities.

When we die without an estate plan or Will, the government chooses how our estate is passed. This means that the laws of the state of New York, written and passed by our state legislature, determine your estate plan. See our prior blog regarding intestacy to learn how the government will distribute your estate.
